HARMONIC DRIVE AG - Backlash free at lowest weight the most superior gear solution for electrical actuation in aviation

Sebastian MüLLER, Sales Engineer Aerospace, Defence & Special Environments

The weight and power consumption advantages of electro-mechanical actuators over hydraulic systems have been understood for many years.
New developments from Harmonic Drive AG have led to an improved electro-mechanical actuator system that incorporates these benefits combined with the compactness and weight savings inherent with strain wave gears. This unique gear design provides backlash-free, high accuracy transmission of rotational movement at high reliability. Harmonic Drive gears are available with hollow shaft that create multiple opportunities for designers in the process of system integration, such as:

  • Second measuring system on the output side
  • Compact spindle drives
  • Feed-through of wires and cables, apart from external environment

Available in stainless steel, we provide highly integrated gear solutions for aviation, defence and space industry.
This technical paper will discuss new developments and present technical possibilities, including application examples of how compact gear integration can be.
